As with so many great jazz pianists, there is a thin line between Jazz and classical music in their playing, and nowhere is this more accurate than in Evans’s playing. I wish that the pressing plant had been a better one (RTI, Pallas or even Optimal on a good day) or that they had care more about their job with all the work that has preceded the pressing. This collector's edition vinyl album features a selection of eight musical gems, pressed on a high-quality 180g black vinyl, encapsulating the essence of Bill Evans' elegant and emotive playing style. The beautifully designed triple gatefold LP set showcases previously unpublished photos by Jan Persson from Evans’ Danish tours, as well as insightful liner notes by acclaimed author, journalist and Evans scholar, Marc Myers, plus interviews and statements from Danish drummer Alex Riel, music journalist, Danish producer and Evans discographer Peter Larsen, Palle Mikkelborg, Evans’ longtime trio mates - bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Marty Morell, and pianists Ran Blake and Matthew Shipp.

Treasures: Solo, Trio and Orchestra Recordings from Denmark (1965-1969) is a set of never-before-released recordings of jazz piano icon Bill Evans, taped with excellent sound quality either live or in Danish TV and Radio studios in the mid-to-late 1960s.As a user, I have always admired Bill Evans' ability to evoke emotions through his playing, and the "Treasures" album is a testament to this prowess. Fans of Bill Evans are hardly short of existing material, what with reissues, compilations and ‘newly discovered rarities’ adding to an already bulging discography – not to mention that Evans obsessively revisited a handful of tunes over and over, year after year.

Bass and drum solos don’t distract but ass energy to Evan’s precious as he dissects and reassembles the Disney/Larry Morey and Frank Churchill classic. Highlights of the collection include trio performances from 1965 featuring legendary Danish jazz bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen; the only solo piano version of 'My Funny Valentine' by Evans known to exist; a 1966 orchestral suite performed with the Evans trio accompanied by the Danish Radio Big Bandconducted by trumpeter/arranger Palle Mikkelborg; and much more! There are some highlights here and there but overall this 3LP set feels a little lackluster and lifeless.Reddit and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to provide you with a better experience. I would never pretend to be an Evans scholar, or even expert, but I am an unabashed fan who loves the man's playing and writing; so every release from the endlessly capacious Evans vaults is eagerly awaited chez moi. Punk 45: There Is No Such Thing As Society (2024 Edition) Get A Job, Get A Car, Get A Bed, Get Drunk! On one piece, he might leave chasms of silence and finger each note with almost painful delicacy, and on another, his playing might be very dense, as if he’s compelled to explore every structural possibility simultaneously.

Six solo radio performances circa 1965 take disc 2 to a quieter time and place; Evans contemplating the verdant harmonics and inherent beauty of "Re: Person I Knew," "'Round Midnight," and the only known solo, luminous version of "My Funny Valentine.

If Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue is the most common entry point for a new jazz fan and John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme is number two, a typical next step would be an album by Bill Evans. The Royal Dutch Symphony (featuring trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg) joins bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Marty Morrell (who all share their recollections of the time in the beautifully curated deluxe booklet) for luxuriant renderings of, among others, "Time Remembered" and "My Bells. They illustrated how committed he was to furthering his music and ensuring he was focused on the interplay and dynamics that his fellow musicians deserved so that his music shone, whether in a trio or with an orchestra. The second disc contains later trio recordings, this time featuring bassist Eddie Gomez, eventually the pianist’s longest-tenured collaborator, along with drummers Alex Riel (on the ’66 set) and Marty Morell (from a ’69 session).
